Definition
AI Overviews are summaries generated automatically by Google's Gemini models and displayed at the top of some search results pages, synthesizing information from several web sources and adding citation links to the pages they draw on.
In plain English
When you search on Google, you sometimes see a box at the top of the page, above the traditional results. It gives a direct answer to your question, written by Google's AI, which compiles and rephrases content found on different websites. Google rolled AI Overviews out to everyone in the US on May 14, 2024.
These summaries mark a major shift in how Google presents information. Instead of making you click several links to compare answers, the AI pulls out the relevant points and assembles them into a single, coherent summary. Each statement usually comes with small links to the sources used.
For a law firm, this changes online visibility. Your content no longer aims only to appear in the top 10 results, but to be selected and cited by Google's AI in its summary. That calls for a different approach to web writing, one that favors factual clarity and structure.
For a law firm
An employment law firm publishes a detailed article on being fired while on medical leave. The article sets out the legal conditions clearly, cites the relevant federal and state statutes, and walks through each step of the process.
When a worker searches "can I be fired while on medical leave," Google generates an AI Overview that cites three sources, including the firm's article. The summary reuses two key sentences from its content, with a direct link. The firm gets qualified traffic without necessarily holding the top organic spot, because the AI judged its content factual and well structured, worth citing in its answer.
The Hendy figure
Across the law firms we work with, about 15% to 20% of targeted queries now trigger an AI Overview on average, with wide variation from one practice area to another. Procedural questions ("how to," "what are the requirements") trigger more AI Overviews than searches for a local law firm.
The questions your future clients ask before they look for a lawyer are the ones Google answers first, so they are where a citation is worth winning.
Key takeaways
- AI Overviews favor structured, factual content that cites precise legal sources.
- Being cited in an AI Overview can bring qualified traffic even without the top organic position.
- The shift is part of the broader trend of zero-click search and calls for adapting your GEO strategy.
- The Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console, open to all sites since August 31, 2026, shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews.
