Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Definition

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that search engines and AI assistants quote it directly as the answer to a question, without the user needing to click through to a website. The goal is to be the answer, not one link among ten.

In plain English

Traditional SEO aims to earn clicks to your website. AEO structures your content so it becomes THE answer shown directly in Google (the featured snippet, often called position zero), picked up by ChatGPT, Claude, or a voice assistant. The aim is no longer just to appear in the results, but to be cited as the reference source.

For a law firm, that means writing complete, verifiable answers to common legal questions. A clear explanation of the filing deadline for a wrongful termination claim, written as a standalone paragraph, has a better chance of being quoted than a 2,000-word blog post where the answer is buried.

AEO overlaps with generative engine optimization (GEO) but covers more ground: it applies to Google's featured snippets as well as to voice search on a phone. It is the logical next step of zero-click search, where the user gets the answer without visiting any site.

For a law firm

Take a real estate law firm in Houston. Instead of a general article on "commercial leases," the AEO approach builds structured blocks of content that each answer one precise question, such as "How much notice must a tenant give to end a commercial lease early?" The answer, written in two or three factual sentences that point to the lease terms and the state statute, becomes quotable by any AI assistant.

The result: even if the user never clicks through to your site, your firm is named as the source. Your credibility grows with prospective clients who discover your name through Perplexity or Google Assistant before they actively look for a lawyer.

The Hendy figure

Across the law firms we work with, AEO-optimized content (short definitions, structured FAQs) earns on average 40% more citations in AI tools than classic long-form articles, as observed since 2024.

A short, self-contained answer is easier for an AI tool to lift and attribute than a passage buried in the middle of a long article.

Key takeaways

  • AEO optimizes for being quoted directly, not for earning clicks.
  • The preferred format: short, factual answers written as standalone paragraphs.
  • AEO complements SEO: your firm gains visibility even when no one visits your site.
