Why legal clicks cost more

One case can bring thousands of dollars in fees, so firms bid high on the same urgent searches. And legal ads convert below average: 5.55% against 8.18%.

Why the average hides a wide range

The average lawyer CPC blends cheap long-tail searches with personal injury terms that can cost ten times more: a reference point, not a budget.

Law firm PPC cost by practice area

Each practice area runs its own auction. Here are the typical ranges we plan with, as in our complete guide to Google Ads for law firms.

Practice areaTypical cost per click
Family law, divorce$8 to $25
Immigration$8 to $25
Employment law$10 to $30
Criminal defense, DUI$15 to $50
Business law$20 to $60
Personal injury$50 to $200+

Why personal injury costs the most

Personal injury firms earn a share of the recovery, so one signed case justifies a high bid, and national firms chase the same searches.

Check your own market

These ranges are not quotes: test your own keywords in Google Keyword Planner, set to your city.

Marketing and software keywords

Vendors pay more to reach law firms. In our research (DataForSEO, Google Ads US data, October 2026), these are the costliest keywords lawyers search, not keywords clients search:

KeywordUS searches per monthAverage CPC
virtual receptionist for law firms110$334.63
personal injury lawyer marketing590$288.61
legal time tracking software390$244.38
ppc for lawyers590$208.62
law firm ppc720$194.73
google ads for law firms320$143.75

What it means for your own bids

A firm on a yearly contract is worth thousands of dollars to a vendor, so the click is priced to match. Your auction works the same way.

From cost per click to cost per signed case

Why cost per click alone misleads

Your cost per lead is your cost per click divided by your conversion rate. A $40 click converting at 10% costs $400 per lead; a $15 click converting at 2% costs $750. Divide by your signing rate to get the cost per signed case.

A worked example in dollars

A hypothetical family law campaign at $3,000 a month:

MetricValue
Cost per click$20
Clicks150
Conversion rate6%
Leads9
Cost per lead$333
Signed cases (1 in 3)3
Cost per signed case$1,000
Fees at $4,500 per case$13,500

That is 4.5 times the spend. In personal injury, the same $3,000 buys only 30 clicks at $100.

What drives your cost, and how to lower it

Quality Score, match types, and negative keywords

Google rates each keyword's Quality Score from 1 to 10 on expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing page experience. The score is a diagnostic, but Google states that higher quality ads typically cost less per click. Start with exact match, add negatives such as "jobs," and give each ad group its own landing page.

Geography and schedule

Target the area you serve, with the "Presence" location option, and run ads when someone can answer the phone.

Local Services Ads: pay per lead

Google's Local Services Ads charge only when a prospective client contacts you. Screened firms get the Google Verified badge; categories include family, criminal, DUI, immigration, and personal injury lawyers.

How much should a law firm budget for Google Ads?

Plan on $2,000 to $4,000 a month to start, enough for at least 100 clicks per campaign: $2,000 at $20 a click, $10,000 at $100 in personal injury. Google may spend up to twice your average daily budget on a given day, but no more than 30.4 times it in a month.

Is $500 a month enough for Google Ads?

Rarely: at $10 to $25 a click, it buys 20 to 50 clicks, one to three leads. Run one practice area on exact match, test Local Services Ads, and build SEO alongside Google Ads.

When to raise the budget

Once you know your cost per signed case, usually after two to three months.

The bottom line: legal clicks are the priciest in the benchmark, but what counts is the cost of a signed case. See our law firm Google Ads agency.
