For a law firm, SEO vs Google Ads comes down to time. Google Ads puts you at the top of the results within days, but you pay for every click and the calls stop when the budget does. SEO takes months to rank, then keeps bringing cases without a cost per click. Most firms need both, in sequence.

This guide helps US firms decide. Need the definitions first? Read our beginner's guide to SEO vs SEM.

What Google Ads costs a law firm

In our Google Ads guide for law firms, typical clicks run $8 to $25 in family law, $15 to $50 in criminal defense, and $50 to $200 or more in personal injury. Plan on $2,000 to $4,000 a month to start, enough for 100 clicks per campaign.

Judge it on cost per signed case. At $30 a click, if 10% of clicks call and half of them hire you, each case costs $600. See our guide to Google Ads costs for lawyers.

What SEO costs, and when it pays

SEO has no media cost: you pay in time or fees for pages, technical fixes, and links. Expect first signs within weeks and serious results in three to six months, longer in a large metro. No budget speeds it up: Google states that it does not accept payment to rank a site higher. See our law firm SEO guide.

When Google Ads should come first

A new firm cannot wait months for rankings, and someone arrested at night calls the first credible firm. Ads cover both cases. Local Services Ads, which charge per lead rather than per click, suit urgent practices.

When SEO should come first

Under $2,000 a month, a campaign rarely gets enough clicks to learn. Put the money into pages and your Google Business Profile, basics you can handle yourself with our local SEO guide. Business and IP practices, with thin search volume and long buying cycles, also favor content.

When you need both from day one

In a competitive metro, a broad personal injury campaign burns its budget in days. Run ads on one case type in exact match, and build SEO on the long tail that larger firms ignore.

What does each channel do to the other?

Is Google Ads part of SEO?

No. Buying ads does not lift organic rankings. But the search terms report shows which queries produced calls, and that tells you which pages to write first: ads are your SEO test lab.

Strong pages help your ads

Landing page experience is one of the three components of Quality Score. A detailed practice area page built for SEO usually beats a thin, ad-only landing page.

Ranking first does not make ads useless

In a 2012 meta-analysis of 390 ad pause studies, Google's researchers found that when an advertiser ranked first organically, about 50% of its ad clicks were incremental, and 100% with no organic listing. So bid where you do not rank yet, and less where you already lead.

How to combine SEO and Google Ads in 2026

A 12-month sequence

  1. Months 1 to 3: ads on one practice area, call tracking, and your core practice area pages.
  2. Months 3 to 6: pages and articles on the search terms that led to signed cases.
  3. Months 6 to 12: lower bids where you reach page one, and move budget to searches you do not rank for.

Budget by cost per signed case

Compare cost per signed case each quarter, fees included, and move money toward the cheaper channel. Ads keep a role for new practice areas, seasonal peaks, and results pages crowded with maps and AI answers.

The bottom line: rent first, then own

Google Ads rents attention; SEO builds an asset you own. For most firms, SEO vs PPC is a question of order: ads to fill the calendar now, SEO to lower the cost of every future case. See our law firm Google Ads agency and law firm SEO services, or talk to us about your growth.

Frequently asked questions

  • Neither wins every time. Google Ads fits a new firm, an urgent practice, or a need for cases this month. SEO fits a tight budget or clients who research for weeks. Most firms get the lowest cost per signed case by starting with ads and building SEO in parallel.
