AI search optimization for law firms is the work of making your firm the source that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode cite or recommend when a prospective client asks a legal question. It rests on consistent firm data, named attorney authors, answer-first pages, reviews, third-party mentions, and open access for AI crawlers.

Below: client behavior, the sources AI engines cite, our eight-step program, ethics, and measurement. For ChatGPT specifics, see how to get cited by ChatGPT; for the method itself, read our guide to generative engine optimization.

What is AI search optimization?

One discipline, several names

AI SEO, LLM SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO), and SEO for AI search all describe one goal: being visible inside an answer written by a language model. We use "AI search optimization" as the umbrella term.

Ranking vs. being cited

Classic SEO aims for a position in the results. AI search optimization aims to get your firm named, linked, or quoted inside the generated answer. When that answer is complete enough, the user never clicks, so the mention becomes the visibility. Our SEO terms glossary defines the basics.

Is AI just a better search engine? How clients look for a lawyer now

Clients ask questions, not keywords

Not quite. A search engine lists pages and lets you choose; an answer engine reads them for you, writes a synthesis, and shows a few sources. Someone facing a DUI charge now describes the situation in full sentences and often sees a few firm names before visiting any website.

Pew Research Center found in early 2025 that 34% of US adults had used ChatGPT, and 58% of those under 30. In May 2025, Google reported that AI Overviews had lifted Google usage by more than 10% for the queries that show them in the US, and opened AI Mode to all US users.

What our research measured

In October 2026, we pulled 91 US Google results pages for law firm marketing keywords through DataForSEO: 88 of them, about 97%, showed an AI Overview. These are queries lawyers type, not their clients, so read it as a sign of how far AI answers have spread in legal search.

Fewer clicks, better-informed callers

In a Pew study of 68,879 searches by 900 US adults (March 2025), users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and a link inside the summary in 1%. That is zero-click search at scale: whoever reaches your site has already read a summary, so your page must confirm it and make booking easy.

An engine can only cite what it can find and trust. For legal questions, the candidates fall into three families.

Your website and attorney pages

For questions such as "How long does a divorce take in Texas?", engines favor pages that answer that exact question, name a qualified author, and cite the law. Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics, a technique it calls query fan-out: each practice area page or FAQ can answer one.

Directories, state bars, and reviews

For "find me a lawyer" questions, engines need third-party evidence: profiles on Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale-Hubbell, and Super Lawyers, your state bar's attorney lookup, and your Google reviews. When these sources disagree, the AI has less reason to name you.

Reddit, local news, and legal publications

In the same Pew study, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit were the most cited sources in Google's AI summaries, 15% of all sources listed. Google has had structured access to Reddit content since a February 2024 partnership. To map your own sources, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your clients' questions and read the source list.

Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?

The same index, a new interface

Evolving. Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. A thin website that ranks nowhere is rarely cited, so our law firm SEO guide remains the entry ticket.

What AI search adds

What changes is the weight of a few signals: answers that can be quoted as they are, identified authors, consistent profiles, and outside mentions. Classic SEO valued them; AI search makes them decisive, as our guide to AI Overviews for law firms shows.

How to optimize a law firm for AI search: steps 1 to 3

Our program has eight steps; the first three define your firm as a clear entity.

Step 1. Measure your baseline

List 10 to 15 real client questions per practice area, mixing information ("what happens at a first DUI hearing in Arizona?") and hiring ("estate planning lawyer in Raleigh"). Run them on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, and note whether your firm is named, linked, or absent, and who appears instead.

Step 2. Make your firm's facts identical everywhere

Firm name, address, phone, attorneys, and practice areas must match on your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, your state bar profile, and legal directories. Fix old addresses and departed partners: an AI repeats stale data as confidently as current data. This is NAP consistency, a core of local SEO for law firms.

Step 3. Give every attorney an author page

Google treats legal topics as "Your Money or Your Life" subjects, where E-E-A-T signals weigh more. Each attorney needs a page with bar admissions, education, practice areas, publications, and a state bar link. Sign every article, date the last legal review, and link the byline to that page.

Steps 4 to 6: answer-first content, reviews, and citations

Step 4. Rewrite key pages answer-first

Turn each H2 into a client question and answer it in the first 40 to 60 words. Cite the statute: a Texas divorce page should say up front that a court may not grant a divorce before the 60th day after filing (Texas Family Code section 6.702). Our guides to practice area pages and H1, H2, and H3 tags show the structure.

Step 5. Build reviews that describe the work

Ask satisfied clients for a review when the matter closes, on Google and on one legal directory, and invite them to mention the type of case. Never offer anything in exchange, and reply without revealing confidential information, as our guide to lawyer reputation management explains.

Step 6. Earn mentions on sites you do not control

Write for your state bar journal, comment on new laws for local news, and appear on podcasts: each mention is independent proof of expertise from a source engines trust. On Reddit, post under your own name, give general information, and never pose as a satisfied client. More in our guide to law firm content marketing.

Steps 7 and 8: structured data, llms.txt, and AI crawler access

Step 7. Add structured data that matches the page

Mark up the firm as LegalService and each attorney as Person, linked to their directory and state bar profiles with sameAs. Google says its AI features need no special markup, but clean data removes ambiguity. FAQPage markup is fine on visible questions, though since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites.

Step 8. Open the door to AI search crawlers

OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers; PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot play that role for Perplexity and Claude. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot are a separate choice, and Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search. Since Cloudflare changed its default to block AI crawlers in July 2025, check that the AI crawlers you want get through your firewall too.

llms.txt: cheap, optional, unproven

llms.txt is a Markdown file that points AI agents to your key pages, proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024. We add it for clients because it takes an hour, but Google says you do not need AI text files to appear in its AI features.

Ethics: what Rule 7.1 covers when an AI describes your firm

Your claims are what AI repeats

ABA Model Rule 7.1 bars false or misleading communications about a lawyer or the lawyer's services. What ChatGPT writes about you is not your communication, but it is built from what you publish. If your site calls you "the best DUI lawyer in Phoenix," the engine repeats your claim, and that claim is what a state bar would examine. Rule 7.2(c) likewise limits who may claim to be a certified specialist.

Reviews, rankings, and paid mentions

Rule 7.2(b) forbids giving anything of value for a recommendation, beyond the reasonable cost of advertising. The FTC's rule on fake reviews, in force since October 21, 2024, bans fake and AI-generated reviews, reviews bought for a given sentiment, and supposedly independent review sites that the business controls.

Client confidentiality comes first

Content for AI search is public, so it never contains client information. ABA Formal Opinion 512 requires informed consent before client information goes into a self-learning tool, and Rule 1.6 requires it before you publish matter details. See our guides to AI for lawyers and ChatGPT in legal practice.

How to measure AI visibility

A monthly prompt panel

Rerun the baseline every month in a fresh session and score each answer: firm named, firm linked, competitor named instead, or wrong information. Answers vary between runs, so read trends over several months. In our experience, a well-restructured page often starts appearing within six to twelve weeks.

AI visibility trackers

Ahrefs Brand Radar covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit tracks prompts on platforms including ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and Peec AI and Otterly.AI monitor mentions and cited sources. All measure your share of answers against competitors.

Traffic and intake signals

Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks inside the Web search report, with no separate line. In GA4, group referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com into one channel, and add "an AI assistant" to your intake form's "How did you hear about us?" question. A useful agency report shows all three side by side.

Where to start: the AI search optimization checklist

  • Baseline measured on the five engines from step 1.
  • Firm data identical on your website, Google Business Profile, state bar profile, and directories.
  • An author page per attorney, linked to the state bar.
  • Three priority pages rewritten answer-first, with statutes cited.
  • AI search crawlers allowed, structured data validated, llms.txt live.
  • A review request at every matter close, and monthly measurement.

Start with the baseline and three priority pages, then expand. Paid search stays a useful complement; our breakdown of Google Ads costs for lawyers helps size it.
